Use AI chat and troubleshoot WordPress
Configure WordPress chat visibility, understand connection status, and fix common plugin problems.
Every paid plan includes RankLadder AI website chat with the complete WordPress toolkit. The trial includes 25 AI chat replies.
Turn on AI chat
- In RankLadder, open Receptionist → Website Chat.
- Turn on Website Chat and finish the brand, greeting, and behavior settings.
- In WordPress, open Settings → RankLadder.
- Under AI chat, choose where the launcher should appear.
- Save your preferences and open a matching public page in a private browser window.
WordPress visibility choices are:
- Entire site — show chat on every public page.
- Only selected pages — show chat only on the pages you choose.
- Everywhere except selected pages — hide chat on the chosen pages and show it elsewhere.
These choices control only AI chat. Booking, review, and call blocks stay wherever you placed them.
When a visitor starts a conversation, the same RankLadder widget and inbox experience used on other websites opens on WordPress. AI questions use approved knowledge. Team messages and AI handoffs land in the RankLadder inbox.
Understand connection status
The WordPress card in RankLadder shows:
- Whether a connection key is active.
- The last eight characters of the saved key.
- When a WordPress site last contacted RankLadder.
- The latest knowledge-sync time and number of new drafts.
Key generated means RankLadder created a key but the plugin has not contacted RankLadder with it yet. Connected in WordPress confirms that the key, business, plan, and server response validated together.
Fix common problems
WordPress has not contacted RankLadder
- Paste the complete
rl_wp_key under Settings → RankLadder and select Connect RankLadder. - Confirm the WordPress server can make outbound HTTPS requests to
https://app.rankladder.app. - Check whether a security plugin, host firewall, or proxy blocks the request.
- Generate a new key if the original was rotated or revoked.
Only AI chat is missing
- Confirm the RankLadder plan is active.
- Confirm Website Chat is enabled in RankLadder.
- Check the page-visibility choice in WordPress.
- Wait up to five minutes for the plugin's configuration cache to refresh.
- Open the page while signed out or in a private window to avoid an old browser page.
A booking, review, or call block is missing
Check the tool's source in RankLadder:
- Booking: active Calendly or Acuity appointment type with a public HTTPS destination.
- Reviews: active Google Business Profile connection and selected location.
- Call: public business phone number.
Unavailable blocks show a setup message only to signed-in WordPress administrators. Public visitors do not see a broken control.
Embedded booking or chat is blocked
If the site sends a strict Content-Security-Policy header, allow https://app.rankladder.app in script-src and frame-src for AI chat. Embedded booking also needs the selected Calendly or Acuity scheduling origin in frame-src. A booking button that opens a new tab does not need a provider frame rule.
Changes are not visible yet
The plugin caches a successful RankLadder configuration for five minutes and briefly backs off after a failed request. Wait, reload the public page, and test again before rotating a working key.
Rotate or disconnect safely
Rotate a key from Settings → Workspace → Connections → WordPress if you think it was exposed. The old key stops working immediately. Paste the newly issued key into Settings → RankLadder to reconnect.
Disconnect in RankLadder to revoke server access. Then select Disconnect this site in WordPress to clear the local key and scheduled sync event.
Older wk_ installations can retain eligible legacy chat and structured data, but the full toolkit requires the dedicated rl_wp_ connection.
